vRigger Learning Center

A new version of vRigger is available! Learn about the new version and how you can upgrade.

This also applies to cable, chain, and webbing.

Gear that is anchored includes anchors, rocks, trees, tripods, trucks, etc.

A "bight" is a simple loop in a rope that does not cross itself.

A "bend" is a knot that joins two ropes together. Bends can only be attached to the end of a rope.

A "hitch" is a type of knot that must be tied around another object.

"Descending devices" (e.g., ATCs, Brake Bar Racks, Figure 8s, Rescue 8s, etc) create friction as their primary purpose. The friction in descending devices is always considered when calculating forces.

The "Safety Factor" is the ratio between the gear's breaking strength and the maximum load applied to the gear (e.g., 5:1).

Selecting Gear

vRigger uses standard Windows commands to select and manipulate gear on the workspace. The easiest way to select gear is by clicking it with your mouse:

Commands are then performed on the selected item. For example, if you select a carabiner and then choose Delete from a menu (or press the Del key), the selected carabiner will be deleted.

Items that are locked cannot be selected.

Selecting multiple items

You can select multiple pieces of gear by clicking on several pieces of gear while pressing the Shift key. Two carabiners are selected in the following illustration.

You can also select multiple pieces of gear by clicking and dragging your mouse on the workspace:

When multiple items are selected, they are surrounded by a larger rectangle. You can click on the "rotator on a stick" or click near the corner of the selection rectangle to rotate all of the selected items.

When multiple pieces of gear are selected, commands are performed on all of the selected items. For example, choosing Delete will delete all of the selected gear. Likewise, if you move gear when multiple pieces of gear are selected (using either your mouse or the arrow keys), all of the selected items are moved.

If you click on gear that is near other gear, a menu will appear that lets you choose the item you are trying to select. In the following example, clicking where the anchor and carabiner overlap caused this menu to be displayed.

Selection Pane

You can also use vRigger's selection pane to select gear. Clicking the Selection Pane button on the Home toolbar displays the selection pane.

Clicking on an item in the selection pane selects that item. Hold the Ctrl key pressed when you click on additional items to select multiple items.

You can also use the selection pane to change the drawing order of gear (i.e., layering).

This video provides additional information about the selection pane.

Additional selection tools

The Select command in the Editing group on the Home toolbar lets you select or deselect all of the items on the workspace.

You can also press the Windows shortcut key Ctrl+A to select all of the gear on the workspace and press Ctrl+U to deselect all gear.

You can move the selection between the items on the workspace by first selecting an item with your mouse and then pressing the Tab or Shift+Tab keys.
